Course Description
The Type Rating Instructor and Synthetic Flight Instructor courses develop experienced pilots into qualified instructors. It provides the skills necessary to conduct training for other pilots, including in Level D full-flight simulators (FFS). It is offered for Boeing B737-NG and Airbus A320 aircraft types. TRI revalidations and renewals also available on request.
Course Outline
- 3 days (24 hours) of classroom-based teaching
- 1 day (8 hours) of ground school training
- 5 days (20 hours) of practical advanced flight training in Full-Flight Simulator
- Each FFS session includes 30 minutes of technical revision
- 1 day (approx. 5.5 hours) of assessment
- Daily schedule: each working day between approx. 07:00 and 19:00, max 8 hours
- Duration: 10 days (flexible option to spread over 20 days)
Course Content
- Briefing and de-briefing techniques
- Observation skills and enhanced behavioural / learning ability assessment
- Threat & error management techniques
- Technical revision in FFS to ensure proficiency in aircraft type being taught (A320 or B737 NG)
Eligibility Requirements
- For TRI (Type Rating Instructor):
- Must hold a CPL, MPL, or ATPL pilot licence for the applicable aircraft category
- Completed at least 30 sectors including take-offs and landings as PIC or co-pilot on the applicable aircraft type of which 15 of those sectors may be conducted in an FFS representing that type in last 12 months
- For SFI (Synthetic Flight Instructor):
- Must hold or have held a CPL, MPL or ATPL
- At least 1,500 hours total flight time
- Completed a Licence Proficiency Check in the last 12 months and either:
- 3 sectors as pilot or observer on type, or
- 2 LOFT sectors in a full flight simulator (FFS) on that type
- A Class 1 medical certificate is required for both
